Seagate and Western Digital are cutting hard drive warranties - in some cases from five years to one. Seagate has cut warranties on certain drives as of Dec. 31, and Western Digital followed suit on Jan. 2. All hard drives shipped prior to those dates will continue to carry the warranty term in effect at the shipping time.

Seagate slashed warranty periods as a way to find extra cash for new product development. However, there will be no change in the warranties for some of enterprise level drives. For more information on hardware warranties from Seagate visit Seagate Warranty and Returns

Western Digital is reducing the warranties on its Caviar Blue, Caviar Green and Scorpio Blue hard drives from three years to two, and for some desktop and laptop drives warranty slashed from 5 years to just 1 year. Western Digital is also expected to start charging for extended warranties.
